Spring 2015 Chris bought a couple of fruit trees from RHS Wisley - an espalier plum and a fan apple. We were both a bit at a loss on how to prune them but Chris did get a few apples (although not the ones that fell off - Widget had those.....). Chris suddenly realised that the plum had grown enormously throughout the summer and was in dire need of pruning. We got local fruit expert, Paul Barnett from Chidham, to come and have a look for us. One look was all he needed to tell us that we had bought the wrong sort of plum on the wrong sort of root stock - thank you Wisley plant adviser who was well aware of the planting situation and space we had for it. So it's out with this one and the search is on for a new one on either a Pixie or Crimps rootstock to ensure it doesn't grow out of control. A quick lesson in pruning espaliers and fans followed by a good prune of the Egremont Russet fan resulted in an interesting afternoon. It has also left me with a new planting area!!
